About Amritsar

Amritsar means the "holy pool of nectar" - depicting a fresh water pool around the Golden Temple - the iconic symbol of Sikh religion made of Gold plates. This is the holy seat of the Sikh Guru and the temple is also known as Harmandir Sahib. The Golden Temple was initiated by Guru Ramdaas Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru, and completed in 1601 by his successor Guru Arjan Dev Ji - there are many a legends and myths around this sanctum sanctorum. It is now a major pilgrimage and tourism hub - and worth a visit.

The other attractions are the Jallianwallah Baug - where innocent Indian protestants were mercilesssly massacred by the British General; and the Wagah Border - beating the retreat ceremony - where Indian and Pakistani soldiers display high voltage drills to out-do each other.

And not to missed is the Amritsari cuisine - the Amritsari Kulcha and Amritsari Fish.
