Many tourists find that trekking in Bhutan is one of the best ways to experience the region, and ours is one of the most popular. Before the government opened their borders to tourists in 1974, hardly anyone had heard of this independent Buddhist kingdom. Even now, the government is very strict about the number of tourists traveling to Bhutan at any given time.

  • The Druk Trek (as it’s locally known) can be completed in 5 to 6 days, depending on the group’s availability.
  • On this Bhutan tour, you will trek approximately 45 kilometres and reach an elevation of 4,200 metres.

The trek begins in Paro and takes you through many of the region’s most popular sites before descending into the Thimphu Valley. The main features of the trip are the stunning lakes that you will see towards the end of the journey, but the scenery of Bhutan is a sight to behold overall.

One of the main things that sets Bhutan apart from other countries is that they measure their development index by the happiness of the people. In other words, they measure in terms of Gross National Happiness as opposed to Gross Domestic Product.

As a part of your Bhutan travel package, we can also arrange a visit to the Taktasang Monastery. This is a Himalayan Buddhist sacred site and temple located on the cliffside of the upper Paro valley.

Viktorianz is a registered tour operator for the kingdom, so you can rest assured that all visas and bookings when traveling in Bhutan will be handled accordingly. All tourists are required to have a visa; we can obtain this for you.

Those interested in travelling to Bhutan can arrive by air or land – there are a number of airports flying into the country (including Delhi and Kathmandu) and there are three Indian border crossings.

On your trip to Bhutan, ensure that you sample the delicious local cuisine. The food is known for its spiciness and is mostly comprised of rice accompanied by side dishes (meat or vegetables). Indian and western food is also available.

Day 1: Arrival At Paro

Arrival at the Paro Airport, and check into your hotel. After lunch visit Drugyel Dzong or the Fortress of Victory from where the Bhutanese repelled many Tibetan invasions. On a good day from here, one can view the majestic Mt. Jhumolhari standing at an altitude of 7329m above the sea. Other places of interest include the National Museum, ParoRinpong Dzong and the local market.

Day 2: Taktasang or The Tiger's Nest

The most famous landmark in the whole of Bhutan, TIger's Nest is a must do from Paro. It is a soft trek up the hill and the most elevating experience to see how this nest at all came into existence. It would take you an easy 5-6 hours to do this - and you should be back by lunch.

Day 3: Paro – Jele Dzong 3560m

Today we begin the trekking trail. Its a short uphill trek of about 4 -5 hours throught the fir forests. You get some breathtaking views of the Paro Valley from the camp.

Day 4: Jele Dzong – Jangchulakha 3750 m

Another half a day of trek uphill along the ridgeline. Some more interesting views begin to unfold along the way.

Day 5: Jangchulakha – Jimilangtsho 3810 m

You continue to trek along the ridge and on a suny day one will get the best views surrounded by beautiful mountains and river valleys. The camp site is near the Lake Jimilangtsho known for their giant sized trout. A distance of 11 km is covered in 5 hours.

Day 6: Jimilangthso – Simkota 4100 m

The trek now enters a different vegetation region. You begin to see short Rhododendron bushes and arrive at the beautiful lake. You will see on the way, the nomadic life of the yak herders. The camp is set by the beautiful Simkota lake.

Day 7: Simkota – Phajoding

Today we begin with a gradual climb reaching 4210m at Labana La. In clear weather you will be able to see the spectacular view of Mt. Gangkar Phuensum, the highest mountain in the country. We now descend down to the family of Monasteries at Phajoding which serves as the View point of the Thimphu valley.

Day 8: Phajoding – Thimphu

We trek downhill till we reach the road head. Your transport from here will take you to your hotel in Thimphu. You should be able to reach your hotel by lunch time. Rest of the day explore Thimphu at your own pace.

Reviews

- Excellent

"Overall I am very happy with this trek. High point was being there at the base camp. The guide and porters, I would say we got the best guide. Someone who is not a trekking guide but a climbing guide was a big plus, specially when we got stuck for 3 days in snow at Machermo and also when the weather looked bad at Gorak Shep. It was a bit disappointing when we were not informed 10kg is the weight limit, thus ended up paying more. I would also recommend avoid booking flights with Makalu airline. So Viktorianz - keep up the good work. The path is difficult but full of learning and adventure!"

"Hi Mike, My overall experience of Base Camp trek that Viktorianz organised was really excellent. One thing I liked the most about the experience was the Nepalese culture. The Guides and porters were great and very helpful. It has been my dream that has come true, and it is an experience of a lifetime for me. Something that I would advise others before the trek is to decide much in advance and be better prepared. The communication of all terms and conditions between all parties could be done well ahead.
