Longyearbyen, one of the world’s most northerly settlements, offers the take off point for a wide variety of options for exploring the polar regions ‘close-up’. One of the most unique of the world phenomenon is the Northen Lights - you have to be fortunate to see this once in a lifetime vistas.
Throughout the winter there is total darkness and temperatures can fall to -40 C. Travel in this high polar environment can’t be compared to anywhere else in Europe – this is way beyond the regions reached by the majority of travellers especially at this time of year, and you will become polar explorers in the true supreme sense of the word! This is about being ‘at one’ with nature, in this dramatic polar environment, only a step away from the North Pole.
By 16 February, the sun is just coming over the horizon again, yet only for a couple of hours each day, so we have more than 22 hours of darkness, creating maximum opportunity each day to witness the aurorae….but these are natural phenomena, and no one can guarantee you will see them!
