Viktorianz bring you the unique and extreme polar dream - we take you to Svalbard, located at 78 degrees north on the northern fringes of Europe, to experience raw untouched extreme arctic wilderness, where the polar bear is king. Longyearbyen, one of the world’s most northerly settlements, offers the take off point for a wide variety of options for exploring the polar regions ‘close-up’. One of the most unique of the world phenomenon is the Northen Lights - you have to be fortunate to see this once in a lifetime vistas.

Throughout the winter there is total darkness and temperatures can fall to -40 C. Travel in this high polar environment can’t be compared to anywhere else in Europe – this is way beyond the regions reached by the majority of travellers especially at this time of year, and you will become polar explorers in the true supreme sense of the word! This is about being ‘at one’ with nature, in this dramatic polar environment, only a step away from the North Pole.

By 16 February, the sun is just coming over the horizon again, yet only for a couple of hours each day, so we have more than 22 hours of darkness, creating maximum opportunity each day to witness the aurorae….but these are natural phenomena, and no one can guarantee you will see them!

Itinerary
Day 1: Depart Oslo airport on the morning flight, arriving 2.5 hours later in Longearbyen

The only permanently-inhabited settlement on the archipelago. Time to explore the 'town' on a two hour taxi tour, which also informs about the coal-mining history which dominates this place. Evening: polar night/Northern Lights opportunities?

Day 2: Dog sledding experience & trip down inside a glacier (ice cave).

Expedition lunch outdoors. Return to hotel mid afternoon.. Evening: polar night/Northern Lights opportunities?

Day 3: Two day snowmobile trip to Isfjord Radio

Now a boutique hotel, transformed from an old radio communications outpost. This is one of the most highly recommended trips on Svalbard, and never fails to impress! Evening: Ideally situated by the edge of the fjord, should any Northern Lights show up!

Day 4: Return to Longyearbyen by snowmobile

Stopping off en route at the Russian settlement of Barentsburg.

Day 5: Time to visit the polar museum (or this can be on Day 1)

Before departing for Longyearbyen airport, and onward travel to Oslo.
