A mountain rising majestically from the savannah plains of East Africa to an astounding height of 5895m, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. It also has a unique distinction of being the tallest free-standing mountain on the planet. Doing Kilimanjaro has been on the bucket list of every keen trekker.
Arrive in Kilimanjaro and transfer to your Hotel in Moshi. In evening we have a brief on the trek and kit check ups.
An hours drive to the Machame gate and the trek begins through dense jungle to Machame Camp.
Today you see change of vegetation as you enter the zones of giant heather and moorland. Optionally you can take a short hike to the Shira Caves after reaching camp.
You climb to the peak Kibo, and you witness the western glaciers across the high-altitude desert of volcanic boulders. You trek up the Lava Tower site (4600m) and get down into Barranco Valley.
You have a steep climb up the Barranco wall and then descend into the Karanga Valley. You will continue after lunch to Barafu Hut, the highest camp. The attempt to summit will begin at 11pm.
At midnight we push to the summit. It's a cold 6 hour hike to top rim up a steep climb. The summit rim is reached at about sunrise. It's a fairly level hike to Uhuru Peak the summit and highest point in Africa. We then get down to Mweka camp (3068m).
From Mweka campsite we walk down to Mweka gate and get on to the vehicle. Return to Moshi for the night.
