North Island
Home to the country’s capital, Wellington, the North Island is known for its many volcanoes and resulting volcanic hot springs. It’s possible to drive from Auckland in the island’s north to Wellington in the south in about 8 hours, making it the ideal destination for a New Zealand road trip – you’ll cover plenty of ground without missing out in the sights.
South Island
Known for being incredibly mountainous, the South Island is home to 18 different peaks that are more than 3000 metres in height (the highest of which is Aoraki or Mount Cook). This island is also home to stunning glaciers and lakes; on small group tours of New Zealand, you will find its climate much cooler than that of the North Island.
