Hiking to Mount Everest Base Camp – Once is Never Enough

Back Adventure Tours Next

One of the most magical experiences a traveller can have is a hike to the famous Mount Everest Base Camp. High on the priority list for both amateur and professional trekkers, conquering base camp is almost akin to conquering the summit itself – and indeed, as close as many will get to the tallest peak in the world. In this guide, we take a look at what it is that makes this hike so breathtaking – apart from the dizzying altitude, of course – and why travellers continue to return to Everest, even after reaching Base Camp.

Mt Everest Base Camp Trek

About Base Camp

One of the most popular trekking destinations in the world, Everest itself was first summited in May 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Over 65 years on, and groups are still completing the same trip every year. Whilst over 4000 people have reached the peak, it’s certainly no easy feat – if you’re want to travel to the famous mountain, but don’t have the time, fitness or budget to reach the summit, a trip to base camp is a great way to make memories that last a lifetime, without the added risk.

Sitting at 5,364m above sea level, the camp is visited by thousands of trekkers each year. Travellers usually fly from Kathmandu to Lukla before beginning the nine-day hike to Lukla – though the return journey takes only three days. Mount Everest Base Camp isn’t just a place to put up a tent, but rather a bustling and exciting pop-up city that never fails to surprise. Spend time exploring and meeting other like-minded people.

Things to See and Do

With so much to see and do on the journey to and from base camp, it’s easy to see why people can’t just go once. Explore the Sagarmatha National Park Museum to learn more about the Sherpa peoples or visit local monasteries for a spiritual and cultural experience unique to the Everest region. As you hike, there are a number of side-treks you can take to see more, and catch a glimpse or two of the mighty mountain. Of course, the one thing you have to do, no matter how many times you visit, is take photos – no one at home will believe how truly beautiful the region is otherwise.

Travelling in Different Seasons

There are two times to travel to Everest Base Camp – April to May offers warmer temperatures and better visibility, whilst September to November is right after monsoon season but right before winter. However, Himalayan weather is known for its unpredictability. Even though these two seasons are chosen for their ‘favourable’ weather, a storm could be hidden behind the next mountain, or it may be sunny one minute and snowing the next. Each time you travel to base camp, you’ll have a different – but just as awe-inspiring – experience.

As you can see, the Mount Everest Base Camp is a must for anyone who wants to expand their horizons and put their physical and mental strength to the test – all whilst surrounded by truly breathtaking views. Even if you’ve already conquered the summit, it isn’t unusual for hikers to return time and time again. Whether you’re a first-time traveller or you’re considering tackling the trek for a second or third time, Viktorianz is skilled and experience in delivering an unforgettable trip. When it comes to Everest, once is never enough.
