North East India – A Great Experiene On A Bike

Back Adventure Tours Next

An area that is rarely visited by travellers, North East India is tucked away between Bangladesh, Tibet, Bhutan and Myanmar. It’s a world away from the chaos of Delhi and the other cities that tourists seem to flock to. If you’re looking for the perfect Indian destination to explore on a motorbike tour, we don’t think you’ll find a better location than this one.

It is comprised of seven sister states – Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Some states have better infrastructure and are easier to travel to than others, but if you’re on a tour you should find it fairly easy to get wherever you want to go.

  • Meet tribal people and learn about their way of life
As this remote part of India has been cut off from the rest of the world for many years, it’s actually one of the rare places in the world where you can meet authentic tribal people who have a very different way of life. This area is home to more than 200 tribes. It’s fascinating to meet these people and learn about their culture – but we do recommend joining a tour! The Hornbill Festival, held in Kohima from 1 – 10 December each year, is the right place to see the cultural and tribal diversity of this unique, explored region.
  • See rare and endangered wildlife
As the region is so unspoilt and unexplored, it has become a refuge for many rare and endangered animals. There are plenty of UNESCO listed national parks in the area where you can see these animals in their natural habitat, one of the most famous being the Kaziranga National Park that thrives on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River. Some of the species you might encounter include: one horned rhinos, red pandas, tigers, elephants and macaques.
  • Experience the Tibetan culture (without visiting Tibet)
Did you know that parts of Arunachal Pradesh actually used to be part of Tibet? By visiting the remote Tenga and Tawang regions, you will be able to experience the enchanting Tibetan culture that is still present without having to leave India. From peaceful historic monasteries to delicious and authentic Tibetan food, it’s all at your fingertips!

For some people, horror stories of dirt, traffic and chaos have put them off visiting India at all. If this describes your attitude, then visiting themesmerising North East will give you the chance to experience a totally different side to the country. Everything is so different – the scenery, the food, the people, the culture – sometimes it’s hard to believe you’re still in India!

There are airports at Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Imphal. You could land at any one of them and begin your most unique journey. The distinct areas that you could visit are the Tenga and Tawang regions, Assam and Majuli Islands (including Kaziranga National Park), Assam and Meghalaya region, and the Manipur region. Each one of them would need about a week’s travel plan.

As North East India has only recently started to open up to tourism, the restrictions on travel and permit requirements are becoming more relaxed.
